Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India, on the 29th of October, appointed Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI.)

Recommended by Ranjan Gogoi, the current CJI of India, Justice S.A. Bobde would succeed him and become the 47th CJI.

CJI Ranjan Gogoi is going to retire on the 17th of November, having completed a term of 13 months.  Mr. Gogoi, who was former CJI Dipak Misra’s successor, took oath on the 3rd of October.

Justice S.A. Bobde is the senior most judge of the Supreme Court and previously served as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.  Justice Bobde would have a tenure of 18 months as he is due to retire on the 23rd of April 2021.

As per the tradition, the outgoing CJI recommends his successor a month ahead of his retirement. On the 18th of October, CJI Gogoi wrote a letter to the Ministry of Law and Justice and recommended Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde.

Justice S.A. Bobde would take over as the new CJI after his oath taking ceremony, which is scheduled to be held on the 18th of November.
