Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India, approved the recommendation of Bhagat Singh Koshyari, the Governor of Maharashtra, of imposing President’s rule in Maharashtra.

The President’s rule came into effect from the 12th of November in Maharashtra.

The recommendation of Mr. Bhagat Singh came after the alliance of the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) failed to form the State Government within the deadline of the 8th of November.

The BJP and the Shiv Sena are fighting for a 50/50 power sharing formula ever since the alliance won the Maharashtra Assembly elections.  Despite several attempts and talks, neither party is ready to let go of the Chief Minister’s post in the State.

After the lapse of an extended deadline of 7:30 P.M., on the 11th of November, the State Governor, on the 12th of November, recommended President’s rule be imposed in the State.

The recommendation was approved by the BJP Cabinet Ministers during a meeting held on the afternoon of the 12th of November.

After the approval of the Union Cabinet, the recommendation was sent to Ram Nath Kovind for approval.

The Ministry of Home Affairs released a statement which read, “The Governor has given his recommendation to the centre, saying that there is no party which seems to be in a position to form the government. Hence, he recommended the President’s rule.”

The President’s rule has been imposed for 6 months.  However, if any political party proves its majority, that party can form the Government and the President’s rule would be withdrawn.

Stay tuned for further updates.
