Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Kedarnath shrine in Uttarakhand one day after Diwali. During his visit, he laid the foundation for five new reconstruction projects.

PM Modi explained that he planned to reconstruct the hill shrine in 2013 but Congress denied the project.

Devastating floods had hit Uttarakhand in 2013 that killed 5,000 people and destroyed parts of the shrine and several towns and villages.

Narendra Modi said he immediately went to Uttarakhand in 2013 after the floods and suggested a reconstruction project to the then Congress Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Vijay Bahuguna. The CM agreed to the project and Modi the then Gujarat CM was ready to lend a helping hand.

Modi was quoted saying today, “In my excitement, I shared the development with the media and within an hour TV channels flashed it, causing a storm in New Delhi. They (the Congress led UPA government then at the Centre) viewed the development with a kind of alarm as they thought the Gujarat chief minister will now reach Kedarnath and mounted pressure on the then state government not to agree to my request.”

He further added, “I went back disappointed. But perhaps Baba (Lord Shiva) had decided that the responsibility of doing reconstruction work at Kedarnath should be assigned to no one else but to Baba’s son.”

As Modi laid the foundation stones today he stated the projects were ambitious and expensive. But also ensured it would be completed on schedule without a dearth of funds.

Modi’s arrival was welcomed by almost everyone but the former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat of the Congress. The former Minister had a bone to pick with the Prime Minister and questioned, “PM Narendra Modi Ji came over here for the second time we welcome him and if he will come here again for the third time before Lok Sabha election, then again we will be welcoming him. I have already inaugurated all those projects, then why is he inaugurating it again?”
