On the 3rd of July, Pushkar Singh Dhami has been elected as the new Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. The appointment of Mr. Pushkar Singh Dhami was made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislation.

The appointment of the new CM was made within 24 hours of the exit of Tirath Singh Rawat. On the 2nd of July, Tirath Singh Rawat submitted his resignation as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. The Legislation meeting of the BJP started at 3:00 P.M., to elect the new CM. The members of the BJP unit in Uttarakhand and Narendra Singh Tomar, the Union Agriculture Minister (on behalf of the National unit of BJP) were present in today’s meeting.

According to sources, Pushkar Singh Dhami, the young leader of the BJP, would take oath as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, today (the 3rd of July) evening. One of the youngest leaders of the BJP previously was the President of the Youth Wing of the Party in Uttarakhand.

Meanwhile, taking a dig at the constant resigning of the CMs of Uttarakhand and the unstable BJP Government, Veteran Indian National Congress Leader, Harish Rawat said, “What can be a bigger lie than this that by elections cannot be held in Uttarakhand due to COVID-19 and the chief minister is resigning due to constitutional compulsion. The reality is that byelections have been held before in the same COVID period. The byelection has been held in Salt (an assembly constituency in Uttarakhand). The chief minister could have contested from there also.”

It is to be noted, in the past 4 months, two BJP elected CMs of Uttarakhand stepped down from the post. In March 2021, Trivendra Singh Rawat, tendered his resignation, following which, the Party elected Tirath Singh Rawat.

Again, on the 2nd of July, Tirath Singh Rawat tendered his resignation, following the guidelines and eligibility of being CM.

According to the Indian Constitution, Article 164 (4,) a minister who for any period of six consecutive months is not a member of the legislature of the state could not be a minister. In order to continue as the State CM, Tirath Singh Rawat had six months, till the 10th of September, to become a member of the Uttarakhand Assembly. However, Mr. Tirath Singh Raway did not wait for the tenure to end and submitted his resignation 2 months ahead.

It is to be noted, the Uttarakhand Assembly elections are due in 2023.
