Rajasthan Political Turmoil: BJP Demands CBI Probe Against Launched Audiotapes By INC

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the 18th of July, demanded a Central Bureau Investigation (CBI) probe into the recent audiotapes claim of the Indian National Congress(INC,) in Rajasthan.

On the 17th of July, Randeep Singh Surjewala, the Chief Spokesperson of the INC and a senior leader Govind Singh Dotasra, addressed a press conference and released a few audio tapes, alleging the BJP of trying to topple the Rajasthan Government.

The audio tapes were said to be taped phone calls between INC Union Minister Gajendra Shekhawat and two INC Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs.) In addition, the INC also demanded a FIR against Gajendra Shekhawat.

Laxmikant Bhardwaj, the Chief of the BJP in Rajasthan, criticised Randeep Surjewala and Govind Singh Dotasra for associating Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in “conspiring to topple” the Rajasthan Government.

A press conference was conducted a day after the INC alleged the opposition leader Mr. Shekhawat of horse trading the INC MLAs and conspiring against the Ashok Gehlot Government.

The BJP said, “Phone tapping can only be done by authorized agencies as per the due process of law and subject to approve safeguards and SOPs. Each case is also reviewed by a committee chaired by a Cabinet Secretary in case of Central and State Secretary in case of a State Government.”

In regard to this, the BJP also asked for a CBI probe with a reply from the State Government on indulging into phone tapping of the leaders.

Besides probe, the BJP demanded answer to these five questions:

1. Was phone taping done? The INC Government in Rajasthan must answer.

2. Is it not a sensitive and legal issue, if phone tapping has been done?

3. Assuming that you have taped phones, was the SOP followed? The people of Rajasthan want to know whether their privacy has been compromised.

4. Did the INC Government in Rajasthan use unconstitutional ways to save themselves when they found themselves cornered?

5. Is the phone of any person who is related to politics is being tapped?

Sambit Patra, a senior leader of the BJP, said, “In case the telephones had been tapped, it’s delicate and an authorised concern.”

Recently, after Sachin Pilot and 18 rebel MLAs of the INC walked out of the Party, the Rajasthan Government is worried of destabilization of the INC Government.

However, the INC claimed to have the support, 109 MLA, which is more than 101, the majority mark to be in power.

Rajasthan has 200 Assembly seats, of which 107 MLAs are of INC, 72 MLAs of the BJP and 21 independent MLAs.

Of the 21 MLAs, 18 supported the INC and 3 the BJP.

Stay tuned for further updates.
