Research Suggests that Air Pollution Can Cause Kidney Failure

Pollution is a growing problem and each day the atmosphere gets filled with more toxicity. The World Health Organization has sent out many alerts about the raising issue. Many health experts have been struggling with the health issues that come with air pollution.

In a world supported by pollution is already aware that the toxic air causes respiratory issues, eye infections and skin and hair problems. But now experts have added a much serious issue to the list.

A study at the Washington University school in America, has warned that air pollution can lead to chronic kidney disease that will eventually lead to kidney failure.

Researchers at the University have analyzed the effects of air pollution and kidney disease. The evaluation was done on 2.5 million people over 8.5 years since 2004.

Data collected by U.S., Environmental Protection Agency on kidney function and air quality levels were compared by the research team.

The research proved that 44,793 cases of kidney disease and 2,438 cases of kidney failure can be attributed to air pollution.

Assistant professor at Washington University, Ziyad Al-Aly said, “Data on the relationship between air pollution and kidney disease in humans has been scarce.”

He further added, “However, once we analyzed the data, the link between air pollution and the development of kidney disease was clear.”

The kidney is responsible for filtering blood and every polluted particle that enters the bloodstream can cause damage to the kidneys.

Al-Aly reported, “However, no level is completely safe. Even at relatively low levels, there was a relationship between particulate matter concentrations below the EPA thresholds and kidney disease.”

“This constellation of findings suggests that chronic exposure to air pollution is a significant risk factor for the development and progression of kidney disease,” he said.

The journal was published in the American Society of Nephrology and Al-Aly is the senior author of the paper.
