SC Refuses Stay Order On CAA, NPR And NRC

The Supreme Court (SC,) on the 22nd of January, heard the petitions filed against the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act [CAA,] 2019.

After hearing the arguments, the SC refused to put a stay on the CAA and asked the Central Government to file a reply for the same.

Approximately 140 petitions were heard during today’s session.

During the hearing, the lawyer representing the petitioners argued and demanded a stay on the CAA and the National Register of Citizens (NRC.)

However, the Supreme Court refused to grant a stay on the CAA, the NRC and the National Population Register (NPR.)

Instead, the SC gave 4 weeks to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led Central Government to file its reply.

Meanwhile, today’s announcement also means the Central Government is free to implement the CAA, the NRC and the NPR.

On the other hand, the petitions related to Assam and Tripura would be heard separately after the Central Government’s reply.

The Central Government needs to file two replies, one within two weeks about the implementation of the CAA in northeastern states and the other within 4 weeks about the implementation of the CAA across India.

In the next hearing, a bench of five judges would hear the matter.

Stay tuned for further updates.
