The Supreme Court (SC,) on the 21st of August, refused to review the petition filed by the lawyers of P. Chidambaram, the former Finance Minister of India.

On the 20th of August, the Delhi High Court rejected the anticipatory bail appeal of Mr. Chidambaram, following which, he moved the SC and demanded an urgent hearing.

However, the SC also rejected the appeal and said the case will be reviewed by the Chief Justice of India (CJI,) Ranjan Gogoi.

The senior lawyers’ team of Mr. Chidambaram, comprising Abhishek Sanghvi, Salman Khurshid and Kapil Sibal, filed the petition for the urgent hearing.  The SC judges said they cannot pass any immediate verdict until the CJI approves the petition. Therefore, they said the SC will send a file regarding the case to Ranjan Gogoi for leads in the case.

In the petition, Chidambaram raised a question against the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for arresting him.  Chidambaram said, “CBI has just called me once in the investigation of the case and I went and answered all questions and was never called again, so what is the motive of putting up such a notice.”

On the other hand, the ED and the CBI issued a lookout notice against Chidambaram and are continuously trying to trace him.

The legal team of P. Chidambaram asked the ED and the CBI not to take any action until the SC’s hearing.

The CJI will now decide whether the case will be heard today or will get a new hearing date.

Stay tuned for further updates.
