On the 6th of September, the Supreme Court (SC,) refused to postpone the National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET) for the medical field.

The Apex Court refused to review the petition and asked the National Test Agency (NTA) to take a decision regarding the NEET 2021.

The NTA announced that it will conduct the NEET, medical entrance exam on the 12th of September 2021. However, a group of students demanded for postponement in the wake of the Wuhan virus, also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In addition they also argued regarding the pattern of the examination, which is of 200 questions and needed to be done in the span of 2.5 hours. The petitioner also questioned the pressure on students, who would be attempting several competitive exams in the schedule of 7-15 days.

The Court declined to interfere in the matter and asked the NTA to take a final decision. Taking note of the reasons shared as unimpressive, the Top Court allowed the petitioners to make representations to the NTA, if they so desire.

The orders regarding the same were issued by the SC bench led by Justice Mr. A.M. Khanwilkar, Justice Mr. Hrishikesh Roy and Justice Mr. C.T. Ravikumar said, “Relief claimed is to quash public notice issued scheduling NEET UG 2021 on 12th sept. For reasons canvassed by petitioners’ counsel we are neither impressed nor willing to show any indulgence to petitioners or allow them to invoke remedy under Article 32.”

The bench said, “The competent authority may take appropriate decision in accordance with law.” The bench kept their decision neutral and said, “When you hold the exams for 16 lakh students all factors are taken into account, we can’t defer it. Students have been allotted centers also so they can make travel arrangements. Those centers may not be available after 7 days.” However, considering the concerns raised by the students the bench said, “We can say this petition can be treated as representation. We won’t say anything beyond that,” the bench stated.

Therefore, as of now on the 12th of September, NEET examination 2021 would be conducted.

However, if the students represent the filed petition to the NTA, based on which the agency might modify exam dates.
