SC Rejects Petition Filed By Six CMs, Demanding Postponement of JEE Mains and NEET

The Supreme Court (SC,) on the 4th of September, dismissed a petition filed against the conduct of two major entrance exams of India, Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) and National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET.)

After the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced the JEE (Mains) and NEET examination schedule, many students and opposition parties opposed the decision.

In regard to this, chief ministers of six non Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) states filed a joint petition.

Six opposition ruled states, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Punjab and Rajasthan approached the Top court on the 28th of August seeking a postponement of the examinations in view of the coronavirus crisis.

However, the Supreme Court refused to entertain and rejected the petition.

A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, B.R. Gavai and Krishna Murari considered the review plea in chambers and decided to dismiss.

On the 17th of August, the Supreme Court heard several petitions and announced its verdict in the favour of NTA, saying that life must go on and students can’t lose a precious year due to the pandemic.

In 2020, due to the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19, the two major entrance exams, JEE (Mains) and NEET were delayed.

While the JEE Mains started from the 1st of September and would continue till the 6th of September, the NEET is scheduled to be held on the 13th of September.

Approximately 7 lakhs students are appearing for JEE (Mains) and nearly 15 lakh students are going to give NEET in India.

Stay tuned for further updates.
