Shaheen Bagh To No Longer Be A Protest Site If BJP Comes To Power

Shaheen Bagh, which has been a protest site for the past few days, would no longer be one if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) comes to power in Delhi.

On the 28th of January, Parvesh Verma, a member of the BJP, said, “If the BJP forms government on February 11, not a single person will be found at (the protest site) Shaheen Bagh.”

The comments of BJP Member of Parliament (MP) Parvesh Verma stirred controversy ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections.

Thousands of protestors are protesting at Shaheen Bagh against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, which provides citizenship to refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.  The CAA provides citizenship to refugees who are Jains, Buddhists, Sikhs, Christians, Hindus and Parsis and are residing in India since or before the 31st of December, 2014.

Meanwhile, Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister  of Delhi, is in support of the protestors and assured them if the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) comes to power, they would not implement the CAA.

Parvesh Verma also said, “Lakhs of people gather there (Shaheen Bagh). People of Delhi will have to think and take a decision. They’ll enter your houses, rape your sisters and daughters, and kill them. There’s time today, Modi ji and Amit Shah won’t come to save you tomorrow…”

Criticising Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, the Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Parvesh Verma said, “Arvind Kejriwal says he is with Shaheen Bagh and so does Manish Sisodia. The people know that a fire engulfed Kashmir in which their mothers and sisters were raped. This happened in Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Hyderabad.”

Parvesh Verma addressed a meeting on the 28th of January in Vikaspuri Assembly constituency.

The Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled to be held on the 8th of February, 2020.  The major parties contesting the elections are the BJP, the AAP and the Indian National Congress (INC.)

The results of the Delhi Assembly elections would be announced on the 11th of February.

Stay tuned for further updates.
