Shatrughan Sinha, a member of the Indian National Congress (INC,) on the 22nd of July, praised Priyanka Gandhi, the General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in Uttar Pradesh East, for protesting against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)

Ms. Gandhi, on the 19th of July, protested against the BJP led Uttar Pradesh Government for not letting her visit Sonbhadra and meet the families of those who were killed in the Sonbhadra shootout.

On the 16th of July, during a massacre, approximately 10 people lost their lives in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh.

Sinha applauded Priyanka’s effort and said, “Priyanka broached everything with determination, commitment and courted arrest with a smile. Her being in custody was uncalled for. She displayed tremendous composure in those circumstances. It’s my humble appeal that she would be apt as the party president to lead ahead.”

Shatrughan Sinha further said after the resignation of Rahul Gandhi, the INC should appoint Priyanka Gandhi as the President of the Party.

On the 25th of May, Rahul Gandhi, the former President of the INC, submitted his resignation, which led to a major leadership crisis within the Party. However, the Party still did not decide the next President of the Party.

INC leaders like Shatrughan Sinha, Natwar Singh, Anil Shastri and Abhijit Mukherjee approached the Congress Committee to take a decision soon as the failure to do so may cause the Party to split.

Natwar Singh showed his confidence in Priyanka Gandhi and said she is fit for the President’s position, after Rahul Gandhi.

Highlighting Priyanka’s recent move post the Sonbhadra incident, Mr. Natwar said, “You must have witnessed what she (Priyanka Gandhi) did in a village in Uttar Pradesh. It was amazing. She stayed there and achieved what she wanted to.”

On the other hand, Gajanand Hosale, a 28 year old electronics engineer from Pune, expressed his interest to become the President of the INC.

The approach came after Rahul Gandhi appealed to select someone who is not from the Gandhi or Nehru family.

Hosale, who wishes to be the next INC Chief, said, “As Rahul Gandhi is firm on his decision to step down as the president of the Congress, the Party is in a great confusion whom to appoint the new chief and in such a scenario, I wish to file my nomination for the post.”

Hosale, who is not related to the Party in any way, said he will first take the primary membership of the Party and then apply for the President’s post.

The INC and the All India Congress Committee (AICC) is yet to decide the next President of the INC.

Stay tuned for further updates.
