Sonia Gandhi, the interim President of the Indian National Congress (INC,) on the 11th of July, chaired a meeting with the Members of Parliament (MPs) of the INC.

Ms. Gandhi conducted the meeting with 52 MPs through a video conference.

A Congress MP who attended the meeting and wished to be anonymous said, “With no Parliament session, it becomes practically impossible for the opposition to raise issues of importance in a consistent, sustained manner. It was decided that we need to push for a Parliament session now.”

Due to the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus, the parliament session has been put on hold. The Budget session was also conducted in a short span.

The MP who wished to be anonymous said, “But social distancing norms can easily be put in place within the Parliament. Arrangements can be made as there is enough space. A Parliament session is instrumental in the functioning of the country.

According to the leaders, Sonia Gandhi during the meeting asked the MPs about the issues of relevance which they think should be raised when the session commences.

Meanwhile, the INC decided to raise issues like China-India stand off, petrol and diesel price increase and ongoing COVID-19 situation.

Another MP who attended the meeting and does not want to reveal his identity said, “The government’s mishandling of Corona is of most importance. We need to question them in a very committed, passionate fashion in order to corner them in Parliament.”  He further added, “There are figures that in detail show the miserable impact of the lockdown on the industries. A major stand-off is taking place with China, and we must have a session discussing that too.”

The Congress also plans on pushing for entry of journalists in Parliament during the session, whenever it begins.

Another INC MP said, “Our fear is that they are deliberately trying to delay the Parliament session so that they cannot be questioned on all these issues. They will also try and use Corona as an excuse to not allow the entry of media persons. But we will speak against that too.”

The meeting came at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conducted a review meeting with the Cabinet ministers and concerned COVID-19 officials of the Government of India.

Meanwhile, as of 7:00 P. M., India has a total of 8,30,763 positive cases of the Novel Coronavirus. Of the total, 2,85,498 are active cases, 5,22,631 recovered/discharged and 22,255 are deceased.

Stay tuned for further updates.
