Tesla Model X Has Come To India

On Friday, the Teredo Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Mumbai received a registration of the first Tesla X for India. Tesla X is a high end electric car with self driving capabilities. The Premium Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) is owned by the CEO of Business Conglomerate Essar, Prashant Ruia.

The Tesla X is produced at the Tesla factory in Fremont, California. It is ranked seventh among the world’s best selling plug in cars. The Tesla X has falcon wing doors for access to the second and third row seats. The doors that are hinged at the roof rather than the sides are termed as falcon wing doors.

A source from RTO said, “Being an electric vehicle, it is exempted from RTO taxes and cess.” He also added generally a tax of Rs. 20 lakh is charged on imported vehicles that cost more than Rs. 1 crore.

The Tesla X is the 16th electric vehicle registered in Mumbai during the current year. Nine have been registered at Teredo RTO, three at Andheri RTO and Borivali RTO and one at Wadala RTO. The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) added 5 electric buses to its fleet. The buses are currently running on the streets of South Mumbai.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government said they wanted only electric vehicles to run on the Indian roads by 2030. This is a part of its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions under the Global Agreement on climate change. They also stated they plan to reduce the expenditure on oil imports.
