The Trinamool Congress (TMC) Government of West Bengal is expected to pass a resolution against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act [CAA,] 2019.

On the 27th of January, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal and the President of the TMC, is going to pass the resolution against the Act.

The decision of the TMC to pass the resolution came after a few leaders of the Indian National Congress and the Left Front criticised the West Bengal CM for opposing the Act but not passing a resolution against it.

If the West Bengal Government passes the resolution against the Act, it would be the fourth state to do so.

Previously, Kerala, Punjab and Rajasthan also passed a resolution against the CAA.  The Act provides citizenship to refugees residing in India since or before the 31st of December, 2014.  Christian, Jain, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh and Parsi refugees from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan would be granted the citizenship of India.

Partha Chatterjee, the State Parliamentary Affairs Minister of the TMC, submitted a resolution under Rule 169 to the Assembly Speaker on the 20th of January, which would be discussed in the Assembly on the 27th of January.

However, the BJP opposed the move and said passing a resolution against a law which has been implemented by the Central Government is against the Indian Constitution.

The West Bengal Assembly would discuss the same and if the majority of the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) agree, the TMC would pass the resolution against the CAA.

Stay tuned for further updates.
