Kerela Priest Tom Uzhunnalil who was abducted in 2016 from Yemen was finally rescued from captivity from Daesh, on Tuesday. The Centre announced the good news and the External Affairs Minister Sushma Tweeted a picture of the priest and said, “I am happy to inform that Father Tom Uzhunnalil has been rescued.”

The Islamic State or the Daesh had abducted the priest and kept him in captivity in Yemen for more than a year.

The rescue was successful after continuous efforts made by the Oman Foreign Ministry and Yemeni officials.

The officials who reported his rescue also informed that the priest has been taken to Muscat. Reports also revealed that he will be flown back to Kerela tonight.

The priest was abducted in March 2016 by the Daesh when the terrorists attacked an old age home that was run by Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in Aden, a Southern Yemeni city.

During the attack, nearly 15 people from the home were killed by the Daesh.

Earlier, Sushma Swaraj had said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi contacted a number of countries to get in touch with officials in Yemen as India does not have an Embassy of its own in the country.
