The Triple Talaq bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha today by Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. The Law Minister explained today was a historic day and a “significant step towards women empowerment, women’s respect and women’s rights.”
Mr. Prasad further explained the bill was about respect and justice for women and not religion. Many parties at the Lok Sabha disagreed with the bill including All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM.) The AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi alleged the bill was causing injustice to Muslim women. He further state no Muslims were consulted during the drafting of the bill.
The Congress has said it stands for any move that will abolish the Triple Talaq practice. But the party questioned the jail term and suggested changes. The Congress Spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, “We need to strengthen the bill to protect women. If a man who abandons his wife and family is sent to jail how will he give them maintenance?”
The Congress also said it would not insist on the changes when the Bill is put to vote in the Lok Sabha. The Bill has received majority acceptance and will sail through anyways.
