On the 11th of February, a few unidentified assailants opened fire at the convoy of Naresh Yadav, the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Mehrauli constituency.
A volunteer of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) lost his life while trying to save AAP member Naresh Yadav. The incident took place around 11:00 P.M., hours after the Delhi Assembly elections’ results were announced. Naresh Yadav was coming from a temple with 4 volunteers.
Ashok Mann, a 45 year old volunteer, lost his life, while another volunteer was injured and is undergoing treatment at a Delhi hospital.
The news of Ashok Mann’s demise broke out after Sanjay Singh, a senior leader of the AAP, posted a message on his Twitter handle. Mr. Singh said, “मेहरौली विधायक नरेश यादव के क़ाफ़िले पर हमला अशोक मान की सरेआम हत्या ये है दिल्ली में क़ानून का राज, मंदिर से दर्शन करके लौट रहे थे नरेश यादव” (There was an attack on Mehrauli MLA Naresh Yadav’s convoy. Ashok Mann died immediately. This is the condition of the law in Delhi. Naresh Yadav was returning from a temple after offering prayers.)
The AAP registered a First Information Report (FIR) with the Kishangarh Police Station.
In his statement, Naresh Yadav said, “The incident is really unfortunate. I don’t know the reason behind the attack but it happened all of a sudden. Around 4 rounds were fired. The vehicle I was in was attacked. I am sure if Police inquires properly they will be able to identify the assailant (sic.)”
According to sources, 3 people from the crowd opened fire at Naresh Yadav and Ashok Maan.
The Delhi Police said they detained one of the suspects and are interrogating him. The investigation regarding the case is underway.
