After two days of restriction, the Uttar Pradesh Government led by Mr. Yogi Adityanath, finally approved Mr. Rahul Gandhi, the former President of the Indian National Congress (INC) and Ms. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the General Secretary of the INC to visit Lakhimpur, Kheri, U.P.

Since the Lakhimpur incident, as per the direction of the Uttar Pradesh Government, the State police restricted political leaders of the opposition parties to visit the families of the victims. However, on the 6th of October, Wednesday, the State Government finally allowed Mr. Rahul Gandhi and Ms. Priyanka Gandhi to visit Lakhimpur and meet with the victims’ families. The decision regarding the same was taken during a high level Cabinet meeting, held on the evening of the 5th of October.

With this approval, Mr. Rahul Gandhi and Ms. Priyanka Gandhi along with three other leaders are going to visit Lakhimpur. Besides the Gandhi family, Mr. Bhupesh Baghel, the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Mr. Charanjit Singh Channi, the Chief Minister of Punjab and Mr. Randeep Singh Surjewala, a senior INC leader are also scheduled to visit Lakhimpur and meet the family of the victims who lost their lives.

On the 3rd of October, eight people were killed after a SUV driven by Ashish Mishra Teni (the son of Mr. Ajay Mishra Teni, the Union Home Minister for Uttar Pradesh) ran over them. The incident not only sparked tension amongst the protesting farmers but also gave political mileage to the opposition, demanding strict action against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader’s son, who is responsibile for the murder.

Leaders of parties like the All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM,) the Indian National Congress (INC,) the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP,) the Samajwadi Party (SP,) the Political leaders from Punjab, Haryana and other regions also expressed condolences to the farmers and lobbed criticism at the U.P., Government.

The matter has become a national issue with the involvement of the farmers associations, opposition party leaders and human rights associations. Another major reason for the incident to spark political Issues is the upcoming U.P., Assembly elections.

The Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in 2022. Parties like the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP,) the AIMIM, the INC and the BJP are in the fray to contest the elections.
