Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister (CM) of Uttar Pradesh (UP,) on the 13th of September, scrapped a decade long provision under the Allowances and Miscellaneous Act, 1981.

According to this provision, the State Government was paying all the taxes of the State Ministers, which was included in their salaries.

The Act was proposed and implemented in 1981, under the rule of Vishwanath Pratap Singh, the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.  The Act was implemented after an argument that many ministers then were from a poor background and were unable to pay taxes.

However, later, UP was ruled by political figures like Bahujan Samaj Party President Mayawati, who had assets worth Rs. 111 crores in 2012.

The revelation about the 1981 Act was a shock to the common man, as so far, the public has been paying the taxes for all the ministers in the State.

According to sources, so far, approximately 19 Chief Ministers and 1,000 State ministers enjoyed the provision, including Yogi Adityanath.

When asked about the views of the State ministers, they said they did not have an idea about any such provision so far.

On the evening of the 13th of September, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led UP Government scrapped the years old Act, following which, all the ministers of the State have to pay their taxes.

Suresh Kumar Khanna, the Finance Minister of UP, said, “The decision has been taken on the directives of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.”

An official of the Finance Department said in 2018, the State Government paid a total of Rs. 86 lakhs as the taxes of the ministers, including the CM.

With the scrapping of the law, all the ministers will pay their taxes according to their properties, as now, the State Government will not pay their taxes.

Stay tuned for further updates.
