Priyanka Gandhi, the General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in Uttar Pradesh East, on the 19th of July, was seen sitting on a road in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, after she was prevented from visiting Sonbhadra.

Ms. Gandhi was on her way to visit Sonbhadra, where 10 people were killed in a mass killing over a land dispute, when she was stopped.

On the 17th of July, approximately 10 people died and 24 were injured during a shootout in Sonbhadra. The shootout took place due to a land dispute between the Gujjar and Gond communities.

Both the communities were fighting over a piece of land. The fight turned violent, killing 10 people and leaving several injured.

Ms. Gandhi was on a visit to Varanasi and wanted to meet the families of the deceased. However, she was stopped on her way to a village in Sonbhadra, on the grounds of official orders.

Just before her arrival, reports emerged, any sort of public gathering is restricted in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh.

Priyanka Gandhi said the orders are a trick of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led UP Government and Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of UP, who is responsible for increasing the crime rate in the State.

Ms. Gandhi, to protest against the UP Government, sat on the road, surrounded by her security and INC workers.

Ms. Gandhi said, “I only want to meet the affected families, whose members have been mercilessly shot dead. A boy of my son’s age was shot at and is lying in the hospital. Tell me on what legal basis I am stopped here.” She further said, “I am sitting peacefully, can someone please show me the order.”

Before going to Sonbhadra, she went to a hospital and met those wounded in the Sonbhadra shootout.

According to sources, till now, the UP Police arrested 24 people for the shootout, whereas 78 people, including the village head Yagdutt, his brother and others, were charged.

An investigation regarding the case is underway.
