Veteran Actor Tom Alter Succumbs to Cancer

On Friday, veteran theatre and film actor, Tom Alter passed away after losing to stage four skin cancer in Mumbai.

Tom Alter was 67 years old and left behind his wife Carol and daughter Afshaan.

The family released a statement that read, “It is with sadness we announce the death of Tom Alter, actor, writer, director, Padma Shri, and our dear husband and father. Tom passed away Friday night at home with his family and close family members in attendance. We ask for their privacy to be respected at this time.”

Tom Alter was suffering with cancer and had to even have his thumb amputated due to the disease.

The veteran actor debuted in Bollywood in 1976 film Charas by Ramanand Sagar. He has also acted in Manoj Kumar’s Kranti.
One of his notable international works was in Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi.

In the year 2008, Tom was awarded the fourth highest civilian honor in India, the Padma Shri for his contribution to art and cinema.

Apart from acting in over 300 movies and numerous TV shows, Alter started his career out as a sports journalist. He was the first to interview
Sachin Tendulkar on TV just before the cricketer made his debut in India.

The industry is stunned with the sudden passing of a legendary actor. Nimrat Kaur, a Bollywood actress posted on Twitter, “Waking up to some tragic news about the passing away of Mr. Tom Alter. A one of a kind, grace personified, thorough gentleman. #RIPTomAlter”.
