Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) was appointed as the new Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly.

On the 31st of July, the BJP, the ruling Government of Karnataka, announced Vishweshwar Kageri as the Assembly Speaker.

The decision came after K.R. Ramesh Kumar, the former Assembly Speaker of Karnataka, submitted his resignation on the 29th of July, after the BJP won the floor test.

On the 29th of July, B.S. Yediyurappa, the Chief Minister of Karnataka, conducted a no confidence motion and won.

Ramesh Kumar handed over his resignation to Krishna Reddy, the Deputy Speaker of Karnataka and said, “I have decided to relieve myself from this office…I have decided to resign.”

A Karnataka Secretariat official said, “We received only one nomination that was of Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri.”

Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri served as the six time MLA of the Ankola constituency. Kageri also served as the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education of Karnataka.

He entered politics in the year 1994. Before joining politics, Mr. Kageri was an active member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP,) the student wing of the Sangh Parivar.

Mr. Kageri will soon take over as the Speaker of the Karnataka Assembly.
