WB Assembly Elections: Mamata Banerjee Files Nomination From Nandigram Constituency After Grand Roadshow

On the 10th of March, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, filed nomination for the West Bengal Assembly elections.

Ms. Banerjee, the President of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is going to contest from Nandigram Assembly constituency.  The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the 9th of March, addressed a public meeting in Nandigram.  A day after the public meeting, Ms. Banerjee submitted her nomination papers after a 2km road show.

While filing her papers at Haldia sub divisional office, Ms. Banerjee was accompanied by the TMC General Secretary Subrata Bakshi.

The TMC first released the list of 291 candidates for the West Bengal Assembly elections on the 5th of March.  During the release event, Ms. Banerjee announced she would contest from Nandigram instead of her home constituency, Bhawanipore.

The decision to contest from Nandigram was due to the recent joining of Suvendhu Adhikari to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)   The former TMC Minister recently resigned from the Party and joined the BJP.  Suvendhu Adhikari is also the sitting Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of Nandigram.

Reacting upon Ms. Banerjee’s nomination in Nandigram, Mr. Adhikari said, “She (Banerjee) is an outsider in Nandigram.  She does not even cast her vote here.  I am not only the ‘bhoomiputra’ (son of the soil of Nandigram), but also a regular voter of the area.

The face off between Mamata Banerjee and Suvendhu Adhikari for Nandigram constituency would be a high pitched battle.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal Assembly elections are scheduled to be held in 8 phases, starting from the 27th of March, till the 29th of April.

Major parties in fray are the BJP, the Indian National Congress (INC,) the TMC and the Communist Party of India (Marxist.)

This year, the Hyderabad based All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is also contesting the West Bengal elections.

The results of the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections would be announced on the 2nd of May.

Stay tuned for further updates.
