On the 6th of April, the Election Commission of India (ECI) suspended a sector officer Tapan Sarkar. 

According to sources, Tapan Sarkar was alleged to have taken electronic voting machines (EVMs) and Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPATs)to the residence of a Trinamool Congress Leader (TMC.) The incident took place when West Bengal was conducting the third phase of the Assembly elections.

The EVMs and VVPATs were found in Uluberia, Howrah, West Bengal. The ECI immediately removed Tapan Sarkar from the election duties and suspended him for violating election rules. In addition, the ECI also removed the EVM and VVPAT from the polling booth.

The West Bengal Assembly elections which started on the 27th of March, completed two phases and continuing with the third phase elections today, the 6th of April.

The remaining 5 phases of the Assembly elections would continue till the 29th of April. The results would be announced on the 2nd of May.
