The Congress Working Committee (CWC,) finally, on the midnight of the 11th of August, announced the new interim President of the Indian National Congress (INC.)
After a long meeting on the 10th of August, the CWC said Sonia Gandhi will lead the INC, after the resignation of Rahul Gandhi, the former President of the INC.
Sonia Gandhi has always been a strong string of the INC. Since the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India, Sonia Gandhi always took the charge as the leader of the INC.
According to sources, in every situation, when the grand old Indian party, the INC, was about to collapse, the INC leaders approached Sonia Gandhi to take responsibility.
In 1984, after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi had to take over as the Prime Minister of India. Although Sonia Gandhi was against Rajiv Gandhi’s decision of doing so, she had to accept it.
Later, in 1991, after Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, Sonia Gandhi refused to be a part of politics, but due to the pressure of the INC leaders and the CWC, she again had to become the successor of Rajiv Gandhi and handle the Party.
Again, in 1997, when a few INC leaders deserted the Party, she stood up and held the position. Whenever the INC loses hope and is out of options, Sonia Gandhi comes to the Party’s rescue.
Now, when on the 25th of May 2019, Rahul Gandhi resigned as the INC President, the five committees constituted by the CWC named Sonia Gandhi as the interim president.
It is not confirmed if Sonia Gandhi can stand strong and revive the Party against the Bharatiya Janata Party, but she said she will give it a try, instead of running away from the situation.
Another reason to choose Sonia Gandhi is to avoid conflicts between the INC leaders for the position, as no one will oppose Sonia Gandhi as the interim president.
After long discussions, the committees unanimously named Sonia Gandhi. Despite the request of Rahul Gandhi not to choose anyone from the Gandhi or Nehru family, the CWC committees finalised Sonia Gandhi’s name.
It would be interesting to see what Ms. Gandhi will do to revive the old glory of the INC after being defeated by the BJP.
Stay tuned for further updates.
