Sonia Gandhi, the Chairman of the All India Congress Committee (AICC,) was elected as the Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) on the 1st of June.
The newly elected 52 Members of Parliament (MPs) of the Indian National Congress (INC,) who won the Lok Sabha elections, unanimously elected Sonia Gandhi as the CPP Chairperson during a CPP meeting.
The meeting was held on the 1st of June, at Central Hall of Parliament, Delhi.
Apart from newly elected MPs, Rajya Sabha members and Rahul Gandhi, the former President of the INC, were also present at the meeting.
Sonia Gandhi contested the Lok Sabha elections from the Rae Bareli constituency and won the Parliament seat against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.)
Randeep Surjewala, the Spokesperson of the INC, took to Twitter and congratulated Ms. Gandhi for her new post.

After the appointment of the CPP Chairperson, the MPs will soon elect the new leader of the INC.
Due to the decision of Rahul Gandhi to resign as the President’s post, it is not clear who the President of the INC will be.
Though the Congress Working Committee (CWC) rejected Rahul Gandhi’s resignation, he is sticking to his decision and wants to quit as the President of the Party.
After the devastating defeat of the INC in the Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi, on the 25th of May, submitted his resignation to the CWC.
Mr. Gandhi believes he is the reason behind the defeat of the Party against the BJP, as the INC secured only 52 seats out of 542 seats in the Lok Sabha elections.
The next CPP meeting will be held soon, following which, the Party will decide their new President and will also discuss about the INC’s plan of action.
