In a shocking case, a 22 year old woman was found with her hands chained in Jagtial town in Telangana. The family explained the woman was mentally unstable and was chained so she would not escape.

The victim identified as Chityala Geetha, a resident of Vani Nagar was sitting in front of her house with her hands tied. The neighbors approached her as she was crying. Geetha told them her family was torturing her and said, “When I tried to run away from home unable to bear their torture, they tied my hands with an iron chain behind my back and locked it.”

Geetha lost her father a few years ago and has been living with her brothers Chityala Narayana, Ramesh and Srinivas.

A local resident, V. Srinivas explained, “She claimed to have done her graduation in arts and worked as a teacher in a private school for some time. She alleged that her sisters in law Manasa, Latha and Radha had been ill treating her for the last few years and forcing her to do all the household work including bathing their children, washing their clothes etc. Even her brothers used to beat her regularly

The neighbors took the help of a local municipal councilor and took the victim to Jagtial police station. The police unchained her and called her brothers for questioning.

The brothers claimed Geetha is mentally unsound and would throw stones at people. They justified chaining her for the simple reason that they did not want her running away and harming anyone.

Jagtial town Police Inspector R. Prakash reported, “The woman appeared to be very much disturbed mentally though she was speaking normally at times. We are sending her to the hospital to get her checked. If she is found normal, we will take action against the brothers as per the law. In any case, chaining a person is not proper.”

The police also confirmed that the woman would be sent to the State Home for Women if it is proved the family was torturing her.
