On Thursday night, the Commissioner’s Task Force raided the Marriott Hotel in Hyderabad to uncover a gambling racket. The massive raid resulted in the arrest of nearly 36 people.

The police reported to have seized Rs. 23.37 lakhs in cash along with two Axis Bank EPOS (Electronic Point of Sale) machines, mobile phones and liquor bottles.

The officials also stated the three main accused, Sanjay Kumar, Rakesh Juneja and Rajinder Nagpal Singh have absconded.

Additional DCP of the Task Force, C. Shashidhar Raju said, “Three days back they had booked a room on the seventh floor of the star hotel and allowed punters to play the game. They collected about Rs. 3,000 from each punter per game. They plotted to gain easy money illegally. They also provided them with liquor, hookah, smoking and other comfort facilities.”

He further explained, “The organizers were accepting online payment from the participants. For this purpose, they brought two EPOS machines. Preliminary investigation revealed that the machines were brought from a bank by the organizers and we will approach the bank to get more details.”

The organizers provided imported whiskey like Chivas Regal and Black Label to the businessmen gambling. They further reported the participants gave their money in exchange for plastic coins to bet on each game.

The Additional DCP said, “The organizers have a huge network among businessmen who are addicted to playing three cards and the accused are used to organizing such illegal events. We have registered cases against the 36 persons under (the) Gaming Act and also Excise Act for possessing large quantities of liquor. We will consider opening history sheets against five organizers for committing offenses repeatedly in organizing gambling. The organizers have chosen the star hotel to avoid police vigil on their illegal activities.”

The officials sent the arrested individuals to Gandhi Nagar police station for questioning. A manhunt has been launched by the officials to apprehend the other accused.
