In Bangalore, a techie who is now a musician played his guitar while having a brain surgery. The man was diagnosed with musician’s dystonia that causes cramping of the hand. The man had suffered from three of his fingers cramped making it a struggle for him to play the guitar.

The 32 year old man whose name has not been disclosed was experiencing cramps in his hand for more than a year. Musician dystonia is the cause of aggressive use of the muscles that results in abnormal flexion of the muscles.

The operation was carried out as the doctors burned parts of his brain that caused the tremors. He was asked to play the instrument so the doctors could easily locate the affected areas.

A Senior Neurologist at University of British Colombia, Dr. Sanjiv said, “This problem occurred when he tried to play the instrument and real-time feedback was important for us to ascertain the exact location of the target to be repaired.”

A stereotactic and functional neurosurgeon, Dr. Sharan Srinivasan explained the procedure, “This is a surgery where the part of the brain triggering abnormal tremors is destroyed by burning. Before the surgery, a special frame was fixed to his head with four screws going deep into the skull following which an MRI was conducted.”

He further added, “Based on these coordinates, a 14mm hole was drilled into the skull under local anesthesia and a specialized electrode was passed into the brain following which it was stimulated to confirm the right location and prevent complications.”

The patient was thrilled at the results and overjoyed at being able to see his hands healing on the operation table.

He was quoted saying, “By the end of the surgery, my fingers were 100 per cent cured and I could move them like before. Within three days, I walked out of the hospital all set to play guitar again.”
