Boat Carrying 60 people Capsizes in the Yamuna River

Twenty two people died after a boat capsized on the Yamuna River in Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.

District Magistrate Bhawani Singh reported that there were nearly 60 people on the boat. It was further reported that 10 people were rescued and the bodies of 22 people were fished out.

The District Magistrate was quoted saying, “The boat was ferrying passengers more than its capacity. Most of the passengers of the ill fated boat were women. As soon as the boat reached mid stream it capsized.”

The Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced Rs. 2 lakhs each compensation to the next of kin of the deceased.

Chief Minister Adityanath also directed the district magistrate to offer aid to the affected people. A probe has also been ordered into the incident.

The victims were mostly laborers traveling from Bhagpat’s Katha village to Sonipat in Haryana.

Villagers informed the police that they noticed the boat was overcrowded and could have been the reason behind the tragedy.
