EC Chief Calls KCR’s Plans For Early Polls Preposterous

The Election Commission Chief O. P. Rawat called Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s plans for early polls as preposterous. KCR dissolved the Telangana State Assembly yesterday with hopes of going into an early election.

Mr. Rawat stated, “KCR’s comments on elections are preposterous and uncalled for. We are mandated by the Supreme Court to conduct elections at the earliest possible and there should be no delay.”

He further added, “We shouldn’t allow a caretaker government to take the opportunity of delaying elections.”

KCR personally reached out to the Chief Election Commission and discussed the issue. Yesterday, KCR confidently told the public that Telangana would go into elections with the four other states at the end of the year.

Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram are all set to go in elections in November. The Telangana Assembly was dissolved 9 months before the end of its term. Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan asked KCR and the remaining Council of Ministers to carry on in office as a caretaker Government.

The Telangana Assembly would have ended its term in May 2019 and would have gone to election in April or May 2019. Opposition parties did not hesitate to criticize KCR for dissolving the cabinet. The BJP attacked the State Government calling the move undemocratic. KCR was expected to dissolve the cabinet on Sunday during the TRS’s biggest meet.
