GHMC Announced Drains In Hyderabad Are Clogged Due To Plastic

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) recently announced that 40% of the nalas and drains in the city are clogged with plastic. These drains were built in Hyderabad to ease the flow of sewage and rainwater.

The civic body is conducting a desilting drive where the main items blocking the drains were plastic and polythene. The municipal body stated the stagnant water was turning into a mosquito breeding ground. With the recent increase in dengue cases, the GHMC is working toward unclogging the drains.

The GHMC began with desiltation of the open nala in Virat Nagar, Shaikpet. The officials excavated one tonne of waste to understand the cause of the clogging. The waste found was primarily plastic with 40% of silt and the remaining 20% was sewage and rainwater.

After the study, GHMC Commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy urged the citizens to avoid throwing plastic and solid wastes into drains. The GHMC is working toward desiltation of nalas and drains at the cost of Rs. 34.46 crores.
