Hyderabad: A Smart City in the making

According to the recent reports, the Centre has selected four cities from Andhra Pradesh and five cities including Hyderabad from Telangana. These selected cities will be developed into smart cities, by coordinating with the state governments.

Vijayawada, Guntur, Kurnool and Chittoor have been selected from AP while from Telangana, Hyderabad, Warangal, Karimnagar, Nizamabad and Nalgonda are on the list. The Union Cabinet had on Wednesday cleared the development of 100 cities as smart cities across the country. The Centre will spend Rs 6,000 crore.

A net amount of Rs 100 crore will be given every year as Central aid. This will continue for the next  5 years. They will be picked via a ‘City  Challenge Competition’ that will link financing with the cities’ ability to perform the mission objectives, an  official said.

This could mean that Chief Ministers will have to pitch for funds. The criteria will revolve round the cities being able to deliver the last mile connectivity for 24×7 electricity, water, solid waste management and mobility options to the people. This strategy was proposed to keep up with the urbanization of the cities. if every thing goes according to plan, Hyderabad will soon be a smart city.
