Hyderabad: Corruption Captured At The Road Transport Department

On Wednesday, a picture of files with money attached from the Road Transport Department in Hyderabad circulated on social media. This led to authorities sending out a team to conduct a preliminary inquiry.

A Youth for Anti Corruption activist shared a photo that showed a pile of papers with bundles of money attached to each paper. A member of the anti corruption organization said, “The image was clicked at Patancheru RTO office where additional money, apart from the fee paid online, was being collected by brokers. All applications are also stacked with the money charged from people.”

The Cyberabad Police asked the Sangareddy Police to investigate as Patancheru comes under their jurisdiction.

However, District Transport Officer for Sangareddy K. Venkata Ramana explained, “The floor, the table and other objects seen in the image do not suggest the image was taken at RTO Patancheru. I have also had the image checked at other RTO offices. We will enquire further and if an official has been found to indulging in such activities, action will be taken.”

Whistleblower Palnati Rajendra reacted to this incident and said, “It was a sting operation conducted with the help of a complainant who contacted Youth for Anti corruption through our Facebook contact. The complainant informed that despite having all qualifications and supporting documents, his file was not being approved for over two months and when the complainant approached the office, he found (a) bribe being demanded to push the file. On May 8, along with the complainant, a team visited the Patancheru RTO office and found a bunch of applications with a bundle of cash pinned to it.”

The papers in the pictures are marked with the letter ‘B’ revealing they were filed by brokers. This also suggests the bribe was being sent through the brokers.
