The Hyderabad High Court (HC,) on the 19th of February, waived off jail term as a punishment for using mobile phones while driving.

The Cyberabad IV Metropolitan Court imposed the rule of a 4 day jail term for using phones while driving, instead of charging a penalty amount. The Hyderabad HC quashed the verdict of the Cyberabad Court and said, arresting someone for such a minor offence is not appropriate.

The HC took the decision after V. Bharadwaj, an offender, was arrested for using his phone while driving. He was presented in the Cyberabad Court, where the judge gave him a prison sentence of 4 days.

Bharadwaj’s family filed a petition in the HC, following which the HC cancelled the jail term and also dismissed the rule of the jail term.

The High Court also asked the Cyberabad IV Metropolitan Court to think twice before announcing such punishments for minor offences.
