Hyderabad Temperature Rises With Price Hike On Vegetables

Hyderabad’s weather has been getting hotter resulting in the price rise of vegetables. The vegetable prices have been steadily increasing over the last 10 days and are expected to continue till May.

The price of tomatoes have increased by Rs. 7 in the past week. Originally buying a Kg of tomatoes at Rythu Bazars would cost Rs. 10 but now cost Rs. 17. At retail markets, the price of one Kg of tomatoes are sold at Rs. 20 after the rise.

Farmers are struggling with the fluctuating weather which has resulted in production of lesser produce. Prices of green chillies in the city have skyrocketed from Rs. 15 a Kg to Rs. 20 to Rs. 35 a Kg.

Every year, there is a price hike on vegetables due to the hot weather and inadequate water supply. This results in shrinking production during the hottest months in summer. Traders from Rythu Bazar complained the rising temperature caused a major fall in groundwater level resulting in lesser crop yield this season.

The traders also explained the prices on vegetables are likely to double by the end of May. Onion and capsicum prices are decreasing as these vegetables thrive in the Summer. However, the prices for carrots increased by Rs. 7, beans increased by Rs.10, ladyfingers increased by Rs. 5 and brinjal increased by Rs. 6 during the last week.
