Kolkata Doctors Remove 639 Nails From Patient’s Stomach

In a shocking surgery, doctors at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital removed 639 nails from the stomach of a schizophrenic patient.

The state run hospital in Kolkata saved the 48 year old man’s life who swallowed the nails over a period of time.

The doctor who conducted the operation, Dr. Siddhartha Biswas said, “The patient is from North 24 Parganas district’s Gobardanga. He was suffering from schizophrenia and had swallowed nails and soil regularly over a period of time.”

Dr. Biswas explained the surgery took an hour and 45 minutes and said, “We made a 10 cm incision in the abdomen and removed the nails using a magnet. We have also extracted soil.”

The 48 year old man began complaining of stomach pain in the last week of September. After an X ray it was revealed there were 2.5 inches long nails in his stomach. The man was referred to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital where he was operated.

Dr. Biswas further added, “The patient is stable now. We are keeping him under observation before he is given a fitness certificate.”
