Today, the National People’s Party (NPP) President Conrad Sangma took oath as the 12th Chief Minister of Meghalaya. Finally, the NPP managed to bring an end to the 10 year Congress rule in the State.

The Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Amit Shah, Assam Finance Minister Biswa Sarma and many other politicians were present at the swearing in ceremony at Raj Bhavan.

The Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi took to Twitter congratulating Conrad Sangma and others who took the oath along with him. PM Modi tweeted, “Congratulations to @SangmaConrad on taking oath as Meghalaya CM. I also congratulate all others who were sworn in today. My best wishes to this team as it begins work towards fulfilling the dreams and aspirations of the people of Meghalaya.”

Earlier, the Meghalaya State Assembly polls results were declared on the 3rd of March. The Congress retained 21 seats while the NPP stood at 19. The BJP suggested the NPP and the United Democratic Party (UDP) enter into an alliance.

The NPP got support from UDP, the BJP and many other parties. Meanwhile, the Congress, emerging as the single largest party failed to form a coalition Government in Meghalaya.
