A mob allegedly attempted to set a mentally ill man on fire after beating him up on suspicion of being a braid chopper. The police reported the incident on Friday and said it occurred in North Kashmir’s Sopore area.
A video circulated on social media where the man is seen bleeding profusely from the face and the mob screaming to set him on fire. The victim has been identified as Wasim Ahmad Tantray.
A spokesperson from the Sopore Police stated the mob was ruthlessly beating the man when the police arrived. He also said, “Some miscreants were trying to run a tractor over him.”
The spokesperson further added the condition of Tantray was critical and has been shifted to a hospital in Srinagar.
A FIR has been filed by the police and the culprits have been identified. The police said, “Action will be initiated against the culprits.”
In the past month, nearly 130 women have been attacked in Kashmir by men who cut the women’s braids off. But the police have failed to make any arrests due to the obscurity of the cases. The police announced rewards for anyone with information regarding the braid choppers but there have been no leads.
