This story dates back to 400 years ago when Humayun the second emperor of the Mughal empire stopped at a village that he named ‘Shahanshahpur.’

The village has hosted another well known figure, Narendra Modi. The Prime Minister is on a two day trip to Varanasi and he decided to visit the historic place which is 30 km from his Lok Sabha constituency.

Legend has it that Shahanshahpur was the village in which Humayun took shelter after a battle. Humayun lost the Battle of Chausa against Sher Shah Suri and took shelter at an old woman’s hut in Shahanshahpur. Humayun was taken aback by the hospitality of the village and named it Shahanshahpur.

Today, the historic village hosted the Prime Minister of India who visited the village to inaugurate the ‘Pashu Arogya Mela’ (cattle health fair.) The fair was being organized for the first time in the village over 1,800 acres.

Narendra Modi also addressed a public meeting where he planned and laid the foundation for a toilet under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan at the village.

The villagers take pride in the lore about the emperor’s visit to their village. Local MLA, Apna Dal said, “The prime minister’s visit has given the villagers a reason to relive the tale.”

The elderly woman who kindheartedly took Humayun in was unaware of his lineage and gave him food and shelter. Once Humanyun reclaimed the throne he sent his soldiers to award the woman for her hospitality but she, unfortunately, had passed away.

It was then that the village that was called Kalupur was renamed Shahanshahpur.
