At the Nehru Zoological Park, a 44 Year Old Elephant Jamuna died after battling a prolonged illness. Jamuna sprained her hind legs and was being treated by the veterinarians and was under observation since then.

In March this year, Dr. M. Navin Kumar who treated Jamuna said she was put on antibiotics, painkillers and multivitamin doses. Dr. Kumar said, “We have provided doses of antibiotics to subside the kidney infection. The animal was kept under constant health monitoring and was under care to recover her health condition.”

Dr. Manoharan a wildlife veterinary officer from Coimbatore visited Jamuna in Hyderabad to monitor her diet in April. However, Jamuna’s condition continued to deteriorate. Asian elephants live up to the age of 46, however, one Asian elephant was recorded to live till 80 in a zoo.

Jamuna struggled to bear the weight on her hind legs and there was lack of coordination. Elephant expert from Kerala Dr. Jayakumar was also consulted over Jamuna’s health.

The zoo officials shifted Jamuna to a fodder plot for better treatment. Jamuna failed to respond to the treatment from the zoo officials. The post mortem report stated Jamuna had severe congestion in her lungs and spleen, Myocardial hemorrhages in her heart, thickened edges on her kidney and congestion in the liver.

The report said the cause of death was declared as chronic respiratory infection and enteritis.
