PNB Scam: ED Officials To Talk To Dinesh Dubey Today

Today, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials will speak to a former Independent Director of Allahabad Bank, Dinesh Dubey. Dubey alleged the loans were granted to Gitanjali Gems despite his dissent note. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested the retired Punjab National Bank (PNB) Deputy Manager Gokulnath Shetty, suspended PNB employee Manoj Kharat and Nirav Modi’s alleged accountant Hemant Bhatt.

A Law enforcement official said they were tipped off about Nirav Modi. He might be in Hong Kong where he has considerable financial interests. Modi’s lawyer Vijay Agarwal refused to disclose the whereabouts of his client. A Senior Official handling the PNB scam said, “Informers have told us that Nirav Modi in all likelihood is in Hong Kong and his maternal uncle Mehul Choksi is in the US, but in the absence of any official confirmation from Interpol, we cannot say anything conclusively.”

Agarwal said, “Yes, I am in Dubai to hold a meeting in connection with the case and I am in touch with Nirav Modi but I cannot disclose his whereabouts.” On being asked about Modi’s plans to return back to India, Agarwal said, “My client has not fled from India and he is being hounded by multiple agencies simultaneously. A decision with regard to his return will be taken in due course.”

It is said Modi, his wife Ami, his brother Neeshal and maternal uncle Choksi fled India during the first week of January 2018. The CBI has sought help from Interpol to locate Modi and Choksi. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in a statement said, “The fraud in PNB is a case of operational risk arising on account of delinquent behaviour by one or more employees of the bank and failure of internal controls.”

The Congress President Rahul Gandhi questioned the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the PNB scam. Gandhi tweeted, “PM Modi tells kids how to pass exams for 2 hrs, but won’t speak for 2 mins on the 22,000 Cr., banking scam. Mr Jaitley is in hiding. Stop behaving as if you’re guilty! Speak up.” A Senior ED Official said they seized gold and jewellery worth Rs. 20 crores from Gitanjali Group. Till date, the ED officials have seized diamonds, gold and precious stones worth Rs. 5,674 crores from Modi’s firms.
