Telangana Government Announces Telugu As A Compulsory Subject

The Telangana Government decided to make Telugu a mandatory subject in school until intermediate. The new rule will be put into action from the next academic year including the ICSE and CBSE syllabus.

On Tuesday, a review meeting headed by Deputy Chief Minister and State Education Minister Kadiyam Srihari was conducted. At the meeting, Srihari received the Sub Committee report which insisted on making Telugu compulsory from 1st class to intermediate.

The committee is printing special textbooks to suit the non Telugu students. A separate set of exclusive textbooks will be printed for high school students who never studied the language. The report also stressed, at present nearly 1370 schools in the State did not teach Telugu.

The Sub Committee reported the CBSE and ICSE authorities were informed of the new implementation and did not have any objection.

A senior official was quoted saying, “There is no second option for the schools, both in the government and private sector. They have to offer Telugu as a compulsory subject in every class. Those institutions refusing to implement the government decision will not henceforth get approvals from the state education department.”

Telangana Chief Minister KCR earlier stated all schools who do not comply with the new rule will be derecognized and will not be allowed to run in the State.
