Telangana Legislative Assembly Passes Bill To Make Telugu Compulsory

On Saturday, the Telangana Legislative Assembly passed a bill to make the language Telugu compulsory in the State. The ruling party got the support from BJP, AIMIM and TDP.

The Telangana Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools Act, 2018 was moved in the House by the Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Kadiam Srihari. The two minister said the act was proposed to converse the Telugu language.

The Bill reads, “Telugu language shall be,- (a) at school level,- (i) a compulsory subject from Standard I to Standard X; (ii) introduced at Standard I in Primary Schools and Standard VI in the High Schools from the Academic Year 2018-19 and shall be extended for further classes progressively as specified in the Schedule.”

The State Government also explained the bill would be gradually implemented into the system in phases.
