Telangana’s Shrinking Forest Cover Spells Danger For The Wildlife

Telangana’s shrinking forest cover due to laying of roads in forest areas has put the wildlife in danger. A number of wild animals have been killed due to road accidents.

While one blackbuck was seriously injured in a freak accident in Medak another died on the Nanded Akola Highway.

A Chousingha who strayed out of the forests in Veldurthi Mandal was captured by villagers who later returned the antelope to forest authorities. Danger to the wildlife has been seen in many parts of Telangana including Kamareddy District.

During the first week of July, a mongoose was run over by a car near Narsapur forest. As vehicular movement increased in the forest areas a number of squirrels, snakes, monkeys and toads have been killed in road accidents.

Forest Departments have put up boards alerting the citizens of wild life movement. However, negligent driving and overspeeding has resulting in the increasing number of animal deaths.

In just the year 2013, 3000 road accidents involving wild animals were reported in Telangana.
