The most expensive irrigation project in India, Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project (KLIP) that is being constructed in Telangana has had its third accident in three days. This time injuring three people at Shayampet village in Peddapalli district.

News channels reported that on Friday a vehicle carrying three people were traveling through the tunnel at Shayampet when it overturned injuring the three people.

A senior official from the irrigation department reported, “Two of (the) three workers who jumped from the vehicle that overturned sustained fractures and were treated at a private hospital in Karimnagar.”

On Thursday, a migrant worker lost his life due to alleged unsafe work conditions. The victim identified as Devajit Sonowal from Assam was working under the tunnel. The 26 year old worker died on the spot as the roof collapsed on him.

A day prior to this incident seven laborers working on the KLIP in Rajanna Siricilla district died when the tunnel they were working under collapsed.

Deputy Labour Commissioner, A. Gandhi reported that action is being taken against the contractor that is responsible for the tunnel work.

A. Gandhi visited the site and reported that there were certain violations under the labor law and also noticed poor safety measures. He also assured that the contractors will be paying a proper compensation to the deceased family members.

Telangana Irrigation Minister, T. Harish Rao has ordered an inquiry that will be headed by irrigation Department Special Chief Secretary S.K. Joshi.
