The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced two new Indian Premier League (IPL) teams.
The addition of the two new IPL teams was announced on the 25th of October, Monday.
The decision was taken in September, after the Governing Council of the Indian Premier League conducted a meeting.
The new teams, team Ahmedabad and team Lucknow were announced a day after the T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan. The T20 World Cup match was scheduled on the 24th of October, which was won by Pakistan.
Initially, the BCCI had shortlisted six cities to be new IPL teams. The shortlisted cities were Guwahati, Ranchi, Cuttack (all East), Ahmedabad (West), Lucknow (Central Zone), and Dharamsala (North.) However, on Monday evening, the BCCI announced Ahmedabad and Lucknow to be the final selected teams.
During the auction of these two newly announced teams, the Sanjiv Goenka led RPSG group won the bid for Lucknow. He bid approximately Rs. 7,000 crores and is now the owner of the Lucknow IPL team. The Ahmedabad team has been given to the private equity firm CVC Capitals named Irelia at an approximate cost of Rs. 5,200 crores. The auction event was held after the teams were announced. The BCCI said, “So folks, the agonising wait has ended! RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group and CVC Capital will be the proud owners of the two new IPL franchises that join the league from next season onwards.”
With this there are now 10 IPL teams: Mumbai Indians (MI,) RCB, Chennai Super Kings (CSK,) Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH,) Rajasthan Royals (RR,) Punjab Kings XI, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR,) Delhi Capitals (DC,) Team Lucknow and Team Ahmedabad.
