The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI,) on the 1st of August, extended Ravi Shastri’s tenure as the Coach of the Indian Cricket Team for the West India Tour 2019.

Ravi Shastri completed his tenure when the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup 2019 ended.

The BCCI formed a Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC,) comprising Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy, to select a new coach.

The last date to apply for the coach’s position was the 31st of July.  The CAC will soon consider the applications and select a coach.

As of now, the BCCI did not receive any suitable application which matches the requirements of the BCCI for the coach’s post, except Tom Moody’s application.  The BCCI extended the tenure of Ravi Shastri until the CAC hires a new coach for the Indian Cricket Team, as the West Indies Tour will begin from the 3rd of August.

Tom Moody is the Director of Cricket for the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and is associated with the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well.  He also was the coach for a national game in 2007.

When asked about whether Kohli’s comments regarding the coach will influence the CAC while choosing a coach, Gaekwad said, “It all depends on BCCI. BCCI has to give us guidelines and then we will go accordingly. He (Virat Kohli) has already said yesterday (what he wants). When we chose the women’s coach, we did not contact anybody. We did it on our own.”  He further said, “We have to go with an open mind. There are interviews to be conducted. A lot of people from India and abroad have applied. We have to go there and assess things.”

The CAC panel will select the coach based on 3 things—planning, man management and technical expertise.

Anshuman Gaekwad said, “These three things are most important for a coach to succeed. The Indian team is doing well. But to get them to do better, these are the three things. There are a lot of things. But these are the main things.”

The CAC is scrutinising the applications and will soon announce the Coach of the Indian Cricket Team.

Stay tuned for further updates.
