Cricketer Mr. Yuvraj Singh was arrested on the 17th of October, Sunday, for making a casteist remark.

On Sunday, the Haryana Police arrested the Indian Cricketer for alleged casteist remarks, after the arrest orders from a High Court (HC.) Mr. Singh was arrested on the afternoon of the 17th of October, and was released on an interim bail later.

The First Information Report (FIR) for Mr. Yuvraj Singh’s casteist remark was filed by a lawyer and a Dalit activist Mr. Rajat Kalsan. According to the FIR, filed with the Hansi Police Station in Hisar, Haryana, Mr. Kalsan said, the Cricketer’s remark during a live chat session on Instagram, has hurt the sentiments of the Dalit Community. In the video, Mr. Yuvraj Singh was making inappropriate remarks against another Cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal, hurting the people of the Dalit Community. Mr. Yuvraj Singh even posted an apology for the remarks, after being bashed by netizens. In his apology, Mr. Yuvraj Singh said, “If I have unintentionally hurt anybody’s sentiments or feelings. I understand that while I was having a conversation with my friends, I was misunderstood, which was unwarranted. However, as a responsible Indian I want to say that if I have unintentionally hurt anybody’s sentiments or feelings, I would like to express regret for the same. My love for India and all its people is eternal.”

Although the incident happened in June 2020, it was reported in February 2021 and the first arrest came months later.

However, in February, the lawyer filed a FIR and after many days of investigation and trials, the Hisar Police arrested Mr. Yuvraj Singh. The arrest was for just a few hours and after interrogation he was released on interim bail. It is to be noted, hours after the arrest, Mr. Yuvraj Singh filed a plea in the Haryana High Court to quash the FIR, the court approved an interim bail and said, for the probe, the Police could arrest Mr. Yuvraj, but would be released after the investigation on the interim bail with a surety bond, as ordered by the Punjab and the Haryana High courts.

Mr. Rajat Kansal expressed disappointment over the special treatment given to the cricketer and is expected to move to the Supreme Court, against the interim bail given to Mr. Yuvraj Singh.

Meanwhile, Ms. Nitika Gahlaut, the Superintendent of Police (Hansi) Nitika Gahlaut said, “We only made a formal arrest and he was released on bail in compliance with the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.”

The FIR was filed against the Cricketer under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The investigation in the matter is underway.
